What this tool does

Background Remover uses an AI segmentation model (ISNet) running entirely in your browser via WebAssembly to automatically detect and remove the background from any photo. The result is a high-quality transparent PNG — perfect for product shots, profile photos, tattoo references, and more.

Unlike cloud-based services, your images never leave your device. No usage limits, no watermarks, no account required.

FAQ

Why does it take longer the first time?

The AI model (~40 MB) is downloaded to your browser on first use. Your browser caches it automatically, so all future uses process in seconds without any download.

What image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC are all supported as input. The output is always a transparent PNG file.

How accurate is the background detection?

The tool uses ISNet, a high-precision segmentation model that handles hair, fur, and fine edges very well. For subjects with similar colors to the background, results may vary — but you can always run it through again or use the result as a starting point.

Can I use this to prepare tattoo reference images?

Yes. Isolating a subject on a transparent background is a great first step. You can then place it on a different background or use the Photo to Stencil tool to convert it to a printable stencil.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The tool runs in any modern browser, including Safari and Chrome on mobile. Processing may be slightly slower on older phones.

Are my images kept private?

Completely. The AI model runs in your browser using WebAssembly and ONNX Runtime. Your images are never uploaded, stored, or shared — everything happens locally on your device.
